IN SECOND GRADE AND OLDER (TO ADULT)

* Any of the signs listed at a younger age

* Late learning to tie his or her shoes

* Mispronounces multi-syllable words
   (aminal for animal, mecidine for medicine)

* Orally misuses words that sound similar (lotion for ocean, arthritis for bronchitis)

* Choppy, disorganized speech that uses many vague words (thingies, stuff)

* Has trouble memorizing (spelling words, sight words, math facts, names)

* Has trouble reading small, non-visual words (that, an, of, in)

* Still guesses wildly when reading, cannot sound out words, may only use first letter and    shape of word (hurry for heavy)

* Skips parts of words when reading (pin instead of pumpkin, car for carton)

* Spells terribly, has messy handwriting

* Writes reversed or scrambled letters or numbers (b-d, p-q, p-b, gril for girl, 5-2)

* Has trouble completing homework or finishing tests on time, though trying hard

* Has a poor sense of direction or left-right

* Has a family member who is dyslexic or who has three or more of these symptoms

ADULTS ALSO MAY HAVE...

* dropped out of school

* alcohol or substance abuse

* depression / Low Self-Esteem

* a tendency to get lost driving
