IN FIRST GRADE

Is unable to read common one-syllable words, such as mat or top


* Does not recognize the sound of phonemes (such as a, b, s, sh, ck, th) and cannot isolate them ("What begins with the same sound as cat - man, dog, or car?")


* Makes reading errors involving guesswork from pictures or story line cues (horse for pony, big for large) or from the shape or first letter of a word (went for work)


* Cannot consistently recognize common sight words (was, said, does) or spell them


* Confused about left vs. right


* Hates to read and will not try
